Pendennis Castle

English Heritage commissioned us to undertake business planning and funding services in support of their ambition to restore the old barrack block at Pendennis Castle; we were successful in securing £0.4m from the ERDF and £55,000 from the HLF (Heritage Lottery Fund).

The Grade II listed Royal Artillery Barracks at Pendennis Castle (known as the Barrack Block) was built to house soldiers’ quarters at the beginning of the 20th Century, and housed regiments until 1956. The building had lain largely unused on the site since it was vacated as a Youth Hostel in 2000. English Heritage wanted to bring the Barrack Block back to life, with new, interactive exhibits for visitors, improved facilities for visiting schools and other educational groups, and a new function suite for wedding receptions and business use. It was obvious to English Heritage and the site management team at Pendennis Castle that the building had real potential, and that there was a need for the project. However, they needed additional funding support to help them progress their plans. We helped English Heritage develop the project, prepared a business plan and secured funding from Objective One ERDF (£0.4 m) and Heritage Lottery Fund (£55,000) to assist with the cost of the works. The project is now complete and the refurbished Barrack Block is in full use.
